Our Kind of Day — Music time isn't just at music class, it's all day long! What better way to build family bonds than to sprinkle music and movement throughout playtime, mealtime, clean-up time, bath time, and nighttime? With catchy songs such as "Wishy, Washy, Wee" for bath time, "Go Into the Kitchen" for mealtime, and "Love Somebody" at bedtime, parenting becomes easier and a lot more fun! Over the course of 15 weeks, each lesson is packed with singing, group dances, instrument exploration, play-alongs, story time, creative movement, family jams, and sharing.

This ten-lesson unit of Family Time will explore lots of different ways to move—high and low, fast and slow, zigzag, curvy, and more. Family members will chug around the classroom like trains, clip-clop like horses, and roll over like puppy dogs. They'll hear a story about playing tag together in Can You Catch Me?, and read about a jungle hokey-pokey in Put Your Left Paw In. Show your best groovin' moves—-it's time for Movin' & Groovin'.

Swoosh, vroom, and clickety-clack your way through this delightful theme. Babies and adults will dance, sing, and play instruments to the theme of being on the go. You'll also engage in rituals and playful activities, including intentional touch (also known as infant massage), lap bounces, finger plays, creative movement, vocal play, and more. I'll show you how you can make the most of these musical experiences with your baby as we share them together in class and you extend them at home.

The title alone evokes images of rocking, cuddling, singing, and lulling to sleep, but leading up to sleepy time are many upbeat and playful activities. Babies and Adults will swirl to a dreamy cloud dance in "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland" and also play age-appropriate instruments to "Aiken Drum," and "Sarasponda." Favorite nursery rhymes like "Wee Willie Winkie," and "Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling," are sprinkled throughout, making it easy to weave many of the class songs and activities into your family's daily routines.

Cock-a-doodle-Moo! Hop on the hayride—it's time to head for the farm! In this class you will sing songs about the farm, including "Old MacDonald," "Hayride," and "Clever Cows." I'll show you how you can make the most of these musical experiences with your baby as we share them together in class and you extend them at home. You'll also engage in rituals and playful activities, including intentional touch (also known as infant massage), lap bounces, finger plays, creative movement, vocal play, and more.

The second half of our semester we'll be using Dewdrops! Stop and smell the roses—-and lily of the valley, and tulips, and pansies. In this class, parents and babies will play and move together to songs about flowers, such as "Jasmine Flower," "How Does Your Garden Grow?," and "White Coral Bells." You'll also hear traditional Irish music, dance a jig and move to the "Irish Trot."

Away We Go! -- Hop on the train, get in the car, board the plane, and Away We Go! This class focuses on transportation, a favorite topic for toddlers who are on the go, go, go! Sing and play along with favorite songs, such as “I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad” and “Wheels on the Bus”. Explore fast and slow, smooth and bumpy, and high and low. Read stories about ways to get around. Shiny Dinah tells the story of a train, and Giddy-Up! has a horse, speedboat, racecar, and more to help you get where you want to go.

ABC Music & Me for Summer 2009!

The summer session is underway but there is still time to sign up!

This summer we'll be enjoying ABC Music & Me, with a Carnival theme (5 weeks) followed by a Summer Fun theme (5 weeks).

In Carnival of Music we'll ride on a merry-go-round and move like that silly fellow, the circus Clown. We'll practice our listening skills as we listen for the roar of the lion and the trumpet of the elephant. We'll march in a marching band, waving flags and beating our drums. And just as in every Kindermusik class, we'll explore the many ways to play percussion instruments as we sing and play along to the steady beat.

Classes begin June 30, but you may register at any time.

As the weeks go by and with your active participation, you'll see your child develop important life skills, musical skills, and vocabulary.

I hope 2008 was a year of great joy and prosperity for you and your family, and that 2009 will bring even greater joys!

What better time than the new year to add a few things to my website and freshen things up a bit. Of course, that was my intention exactly one year ago at the start or 2008, but oh how time does fly!

You'll see I've added some great books and CDs to the website (labels to the right). This year I also hope to add more developmental information both for currently enrolled families and those of you who are still trying to decide which music enrichment program is right for your family.

I also plan to share some of my own music with you via the website, as well as some classic finger plays, children's songs and clapping games.

Golden Slumbers

One of the dads in a Village class told me about the Beatles' version of this song.

According to Wikipedia, it is based on a poem by Thomas Dekker and written in a lullaby style. Paul McCartney saw the sheet music for Dekker's lullaby at his father's home in Liverpool which had been left on the piano by his stepsister Ruth McCartney. McCartney could not read music at the time and was unable to read the score, and so he created his own melody and arrangement.

The words originally come from a lullaby in "The Pleasant Comodie of Patient Grissill" written about 1603.

Leave your worries at the door and come prepared to play, learn, bond, and have a great time with your child.

Remove your shoes and your child's shoes inside the door as barefoot is best for your sensory learner.

Leave coats, bags, toys and snacks in the designated area to keep distractions (and tripping!) to a minimum. *Please do not share snacks with another child without his/her parent's permission--this is especially important because of allergies.

Community is an important part of Kindermusik. That's why we have a Gathering Time at the start of every class, so that you may use that time to get to know one another.

Ally Bally

The Scottish lullaby Ally Bally has its origins as a street cry from the 1880s. Robert Coltart, the maker of "Coulter's Candy," traveled about the towns of the Scottish Borders singing this song and selling his candy from a hand barrow to children throughout the region. Uskudar

Uskudar is a suburban district of Istanbul. This Turkish song originated during the early years of the Ottoman Empire and tells the story of a romance between a young woman and a young clerk. As it begins to rain, the two meet on the street in Uskudar. She courts the clerk by dropping her handkerchief on the ground. When the clerk finds it he returns it to her, filled with a candy called Turkish Delight.
